About The Great Arc Exhibition – 2003
DW
The Survey of India, GOI wanted to create an exhibition to commemorate 200 years of mapping, which started with the Great Arc survey, initiated in 1803 by the East India Company, under the leadership of Col. Lambton and George Everest of the East India Company.
DW
A project to map the largest contiguous stretch of land ever undertaken in the world by triangulation, to determine the shape of the earth, as much as to map and consequently annexe every region of what today constitutes India the Great Arc is considered a landmark effort even today.
DW
Design Workshop created The Great Arc Exhibition in two phases:
DW
  • The Conception and Planning stage, which was done in collaboration with the National Institute of Design [NID], Ahmedabad.
  • The Execution – creating the exhibition, which was handled solely by Design Workshop.
The Great Arc Exhibition was part of a six month travelling festival across the UK, and was divided in three parts:
  • The first about humankind’s historic quest for knowledge, and tools that we’ve developed over millennia to map our environment, from land, to the seas and the stars;
  • The second, and main section was about the Survey of India – this segment expressed the magnitude of the enterprise and its importance, giving a strong sense of political, social and emotional implications of this endeavour.
  • And finally, a third section on modern scientific developments and tools for mapping, including GPS technology and GIS mapping.
DW
The Great Arc Exhibition was a landmark exhibition in India, and brought together a range of media – from sound and light presentations, to interactive-media kiosks and multiple screen film presentations.
